Rep. Hackworth Named to
Examine Governor’s
New Legislative Package, Appropriations Bill
House of Representatives takes regional approach to
Bredesen’s Proposals
NASHVILLE (Feb. 6) –
State Rep. Jim Hackworth, D-Clinton, has been appointed by House
Majority Leader Gary Odom, D-Nashville, to evaluate and assign sponsors
to more than 200 bills included in Gov. Phil Bredesen’s new legislative
package. He joins five other House members chosen to examine the
administration’s proposals.
“I’m looking forward to
taking a hard look at this large number of bills submitted by the
governor,” said Hackworth. “We decided to give these
measures to our colleagues whose districts are most affected by the
different bills filed. Obviously an East Tennessee lawmaker would
know more about some issues than members from the state’s other two
grand divisions.”
Although specific details
of Bredesen’s plans aren’t expected until Feb. 21, the ad hoc Advisory
Committee on Administrative Legislation begins meeting this week to
discuss possible sponsors for the governor’s bills.
“We are naming
representatives from across the state to the advisory committee.
That way, we can assign relevant bills to members whose districts
benefit the most from the proposed legislation,” explained Odom.
The Majority Leader is
traditionally responsible for presenting the governor’s budget in the
General Assembly’s regular legislative sessions. Advisory
Committee members will notify Odom about issues that may arise from
governor’s plans, and ensure that the most effective legislators sponsor
bills that affect their regions.
“We’re excited about the
this session because we are focusing on education, health care, jobs and
many other issues directly affecting our constituents,” said
Hackworth.
