"SCHOOLS FIRST" TOWN HALL IN EAST TENNESSEE
EVENT SET FOR MONDAY, APRIL 9, IN ANDERSON COUNTY
Nashville
- Governor Phil Bredesen and Rep. Jim Hackworth will travel to East
Tennessee on Monday, April 9, to discuss his "Schools First" initiative.
At 1 p.m. Eastern Time, Bredesen will kick off a town hall meeting at
Jefferson Middle School, which is located at 200 Fairbanks Road in Oak
Ridge. The Governor will be joined by parents, teachers, local and state
officials and business leaders. A media availability with the Governor
will follow the event.
The Governor's "Schools First"
initiative calls for major new initiatives in Tennessee classrooms.
These new state dollars are intended to free up location education
dollars for more Advanced Placement classes, books and technology,
tutors and other classroom needs. To fund this new initiative, the
Governor has proposed a modest 40-cent increase in the cigarette tax - a
tax that 75% of Tennesseans don't pay.
