Rep.
Hackworth Organizing Service for Senior Citizens’ Recreational Outings
Veteran Lawmaker Announces Benefit to Fund
HOPS Group
NASHVILLE (Aug. 28) –
Rep. Jim Hackworth, D-Clinton, citing a growing but unfulfilled
need, is organizing a transportation program that will enable senior
citizens in rest homes to “get out into the community for recreational
activities,” according to the veteran legislator.
Called Hackworth’s
Outing Program for Seniors, or HOPS, the proposed nonprofit
organization’s declared goal is to continually visit every rest home in
Anderson County and provide rides to residents who wish to attend public
events.
Kicking off the effort is
an Americana music festival at the Museum of Appalachia (Rice Museum),
on Sunday, Oct. 1, starting at 1 p.m. in Norris. “The festival
features four hours of excellent country, bluegrass and gospel tunes.
I want to raise enough money to start HOPS before the Christmas
season,” explained Hackworth.
Local musicians who have
committed to perform at the fundraiser include Anderson County’s David
West and Herb Miller of Norris. In addition, singers from area
churches have been asked to perform Christian-themed music.
Hackworth expressed the hope that the HOPS festival will
become an annual event.
“The proceeds will be used
to provide suitable transportation for local outings and participation
in events around the area. I can assure contributors that 100
percent of the funds raised by the festival are earmarked for HOPS,”
he continued.
The Clinton resident said that he became aware of senior citizens’
transportation needs during visits to constituents. “These men and
women are confined within rest homes every day of the week.
Getting away for recreation is very difficult, and often impossible.
